Singha E-San Open
Thaworn’s Victory On The Long Course

“It is the first time I have played well and won on such a long course – I am shocked but happy”, Thaworn

It is not a new thing for the legendary Thai Thaworn Wiratchant to triumph . With his 11 title winning on Asian Tour circuit so far, this 43 years old is the 2nd most title collector just below his compatriot Thongchai Jaidee. That includes another 3 titles he has won outside Asian Tour events.

Based on that track record, Thaworn’s win in ASEAN PGA series, Singha E-San Open, last July 18 at Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club- Thailand, attracted no special interest from the international golf spectators especially in Asia.

It contradicted with Thaworn’s respond on that victory. He felt his winning was out of the ordinary as the winner of 2005 Indonesia Open felt he had never been able to conquer the long courses like Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club. He carded a 12-under of total 276 to be the winner and beat his compatriot Namchok Tantipokhakul in the play off.

“It is the first time I have played well and won on such a long course – I am shocked but happy”, said the delighted Thaworn at the prize giving session.

He admitted that he had to count on his wizardly short game to deal with the long course , and he did it.

“I had a good day around the greens”, he said. The turning point of his winning was when he used his strong 4 iron tee shot at the 200-yards par-three 17th to level with Namchok who was one stroke ahead. His 5 feet birdie putt placed him in the sudden death play off with Namchok. As to Namchok, his battle against Thaworn was like facing four enemies at one time that were himself, the course, the spectators’ attention and Thaworn’s winning spirit.

His heavy burden was visible when his drive shot ball during the play off , turned sharply on the thick rough at par-five 18th . That means, carding a par in that condition was not an easy thing to do at Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club. Meanwhile, Thaworn calmly placed his drive shot perfectly on the fairway.

“The glowing win” stroke directly to Thaworn when Namchok 2nd shot landed on the rough again, though he finally made it onto the green at the third shot.

Though Namchok was able to make a par, Thaworn’s one birdie putt ended his battle. It was Thaworn Wiratchant’s second victory in ASEAN PGA championship after he won at Heritage Melaka Classic in Malaysia last year and at the same time, keeping the “ tradition“ of “old staggers’ “ victory this season with the winners such as Artemio Murakami, Udorn Duangdecha, Juvic Pagunsan and Chawalit Plaphol.

The next four series of Mercedes-Benz Tour will be staged as Masters Singapore, Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia , and Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam , between August and September .And the final one is the Championship Tour, held at Emeralda Golf Club, Indonesia , entitled Mercedes-Benz Tour Masters Indonesia. For the Indonesian players to win a ticket to the 2010 Tour Championship is still wide open.
