ICTSI Mt. Malarayat Championship
Chawalit Plaphol’s
Spectacular
Comeback
Chawalit Plaphol’s name had not
been heard for quite a long
time among the contenders in
Asian or South East Asian’s golf
championship , but suddenly this
Thai golfer’s name emerged in the middle
of a tight battle between the host country’s
players at Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club,
Batangas, Philippines. It was the fifth series of
ASEAN PGA in this season.
Born on 30 August 1974, this Asian Tour’s two
titles holder surprisingly succeeded in closing an impressive total score 22-under 266 to notch his
second international title , won out of his home
country . His first international winning was at the
ANA Open in Japan in 2004. He left behind his
close contender, this year ‘hottest’ Juvic Pagunsan,
with a whopping seven-stroke margin.
In this US$50,000 tour series, Plaphol did show
his sharp and firm game , leaving no rooms
for others to take off his throne atop the
leaderboard with daily score 65, 64, 69, and 68,
and recorded his first wire-to-wire victory in
ASEAN PGA championship this year.
The golf community in Indonesia might
have still remembered Chawalit Plaphol’s
name when he unexpectedly thrived to
lead the leaderboard with 6-under 66 on
the first day at 2007 Indonesia Open at
Pantai Indah Kapuk.
“This is something for my confidence and it
couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been
struggling with my driver lately and this is
quite important for me since I have not played
well for the last couple of years”, explained
Chawalit who bagged home US$8,126.

In spite of Chawalit Plaphol’s spectacular
comeback, the host country’s players such as
Juvic Pagunsan, Ferdi Aunzo, Antonio Lascuna
and Mars Pucay , victoriously showed their power
in dominating the leaderboard till the final day.
Though Juvic was left by a wide margin
behind the champion, he strikingly moved
down his compatriot , Jay Bayron from the top
of ASEAN PGA Order of Merit for a time being
after he summed up his earning with another
US$5,616 as the runner up.
This 2010 season is the best season for Pagunsan
in ASEAN PGA championship where he has
successfully placed himself at the big five position
at every Mercedes-Benz Tour series including one
win and two times runner up.

The next ASEAN PGA tour series will be
staged at Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club,
Khonkaen, Thailand, on 15-18 July 2010,
entitled Singha E San Open. And referring
to the official statistic record of the personal
players , it seems that the strong players
from the Philippines and Thailand who are
contentedly securing their places at the top
of ASEAN PGA Order of Merit, will still fire
their searing fight.
