Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia
Atthaphon's Final Challenge

Bearing a frustrating phase for ten years is not an easy thing for anyone in any circumstances. Thailand’s Atthaphon Prathummanee was in that stage prior to his decision to come to Indonesia to play in Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia at Emeralda Golf Club, Cimanggis that was the final series of ASEAN PGA tour in 2010. This 32 years-old felt that his game did not progress well year after year.

For Atthaphon, Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia was not just a final series of ASEAN PGA tour but he had planned to make this US$80,000 event to be his final challenge as a touring pro . Before leaving for Indonesia, Atthaphon had told his sponsor and coach that if he still could not lift up his career in this event, then he would decide to take another path to earn a living.

We can make plans but it is God who determines all. And God made a new path in Atthapon’s life ever since he started the first round filled with striking moments. He wonderfully marked his opening performance with eagle on Hole 1st at the well-known sharp course of Emeralda. Then in the last three holes, Atthaphon surprised everyone by shooting hole in one on the 16th and closed the game at 3-under par, 69.

That score instantly put his name on the leaderboard, though his de facto score was far below Filipino Juvic Pagunsan who was a top the

leaderboard with a spectacular 64 after he perfectly finished free-bogey on the day.

The good score increased Atthaphon’s confidence to continue his best rhythm in the second round. He somewhat closed the round well with 2-under par 70 and shared the 6th position alongside his compatriot Passamet Pogamnerd at total of 5-under par 139.

Filipino Antonio Lascuna took the lead on the day after carding a total of 11-under par 133, while Juvic , finished at 1-under par 71 had to move down to the 2nd position , sharing it with the new comer from Malaysia, Nicholas Fung, for a total of 9-under par 135.

In the third round, Atthaphon Prathummanee was ‘on fire’ .He shot a 5-under par 67 and moved up to T5 with Malaysian Mohd. Sukree Othman who was in his good shape as well. Both finished the total of 10-under par 206.

An interesting drama soared between duo Filipinos, Juvic Pagunsan and Antonio Lascuna who were battling their way up to the top of the leaderboard . Juvic, who played all out that day, determinedly took the lead for the total of 13-under par 203.

The result of this final round of Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia had distorted the observers’ prediction where all the seeded players such as Juvic Pagunsan, Antonio Lascuna and Nicholas Fung apparently looked troubled in this ultimate battle.

Juvic plummeted down with 2-over par 74, while Antonio Lascuna showed a static game as previous round, shot an even par. And Nicholas Fung was retained at 1-under par 71 after a day before he was penalized by two shots for tapping down a spike mark.
This condition was an advantage to Atthaphon and the other two Thailand’s ‘fighters’ Namchok Tantipokakul and Wisut Artjanawat who practically played their best game.

Atthaphon who was in the second leader flight together with Antonio Lascuna and Mohd. Sukree Othman, increased his focus when at hole 15th when he saw his name was on the top of the leaderboard with total score of 14-under par. His dramatic game ended on the last hole when he perfectly landed his second shot ball just 1,5 meter from the hole.

A slight put for birdie perfectly put Atthaphon’s fight to an end and solidified his name as the club house leader at total of 15-under par, but yet his heart kept beating at an edgy pace, waiting for Namchok’s final score who was in the last flight. Moreover, Namchock had shot an eagle on the 17th to close a total of 14-under par. That meant, it only took one birdie for Namchok to force for a play off.

A tense atmosphere was imparted when Namchok made a firm stance for his birdie putt from 1,5 meter of the last hole. The air erupted with the spectators’ cheering by the time his ball perfectly slid in to the hole. The result left both players from different generation no other choice than a play off.
